How We Are Saved By Grace
In my article “The purpose of the Ten Commandments’, I spoke about how the commandments help to identify what sin is. It is through the law we can see what is wrong with our lives, what needs to be corrected, the need for repentance and how through Jesus Christ, we are saved.
“The law was our guardian and teacher to lead us until Christ came so now through faith in Christ, we are made right with God.” Galatians 3:24
We cannot use the law to make our lives right with God. Good works will not save us.
“But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the scriptures say, ‘cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all these commands that are written in God’s Book of the Law.’ Consequently it is clear that no one can ever be right with God by trying to keep the law. For the scriptures say, ‘it is through faith that a righteous person has life.” Galatians 3:10 – 11
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is a gift of God – not by works, so that no-one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
Jesus Christ became sin for us and it is through Him we are saved, as well as by God’s grace. We must believe in Him and have faith so our sins can be forgiven and we can have eternal life.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it. There is no judgement awaiting them who trust him. But those who do not trust him have already been judged for not believing in the only Son of God.” John 3:16-18
So you see, the law and good works cannot make us right with God. It is with his grace we are saved and belief in Jesus Christ.
However, this does not give us license to continue sinning. Remember Jesus Christ said, if we love Him we will keep his commandments. It is really about love. Love for God and love for our fellow human beings.
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children too. We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping his commandments, and really, that isn’t difficult. For every child of God defeats this evil world by trusting Christ to give the victory. And the ones who win this battle against the world are the ones who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” I John 5:1-5
We must emulate Christ, for this is what a Christian life is about. To learn more about this read my articles on the Fruit of the Spirit.
Confused? Don’t be. This is essentially what I’m trying to get you to understand:
a) The Ten Commandments identify what sin is.
b) You cannot use the Commandments to save yourself.
c) Jesus Christ died for your sins and you must believe in Him in order to have eternal life.
d) You are saved by God’s grace which is His gift.
e) Once you become a child of God you live your life to emulate Christ who loved God and all humanity. You use the Commandments as a guide to help you learn how to love God and others.
If you wish to be saved then follow these steps.
1) Acknowledge that you are a sinner.
2) Then repent of your sins and ask God for forgiveness.
3) Get baptized.
4) Believe in Jesus Christ that He died for you and your sins.
5) Go and be a witness to others, for you must share your faith.
