Jesus Christ's Death - What Does it Mean for Us?
Eternal Life
Jesus Christ died to save us from our sins. The bible states that:
“ the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” Romans 6:23
Once we have sin in our lives we are doomed. This means when we die, there is no chance for us beyond the grave. However, if we are saved from our sins, then we have the chance to enjoy eternal life with Jesus in the Kingdom of God.
Sin has been around since Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden. It is not possible for man to stop sinning on his own. Since God loves us and does not want any of us to perish, he sent Jesus as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
“God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love. It is not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins”. I John 4:9-10
Reconciliation to God
Sin also separates us from God. (Isaiah 59:2). Jesus’ death helped us to be reconciled to God.
“For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!” Romans 5:10 (NIV)
Sin No More
But what happens next? What do we do now? Is it to just believe in Jesus, continue sinning and remained saved? Of course not! Some people believe that all it takes is just belief in Christ and continue life as normal. But that is not what the Bible teaches.
“Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more kindness and forgiveness? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Romans 6:1-2
The point of accepting Jesus as your Saviour is to live a life of righteousness. And yes, we are also saved by grace, but grace does not give us a licence to sin. Grace gives us the opportunity to start afresh, to put all our mistakes behind us and start a new and pure life.
“Do not let sin control the way you live, do not give in to its lustful desires. Do not let any part of your body become a tool of wickedness, to be used for sinning. Instead, give yourselves completely to God since you have been given new life. And use your whole body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God. Sin is no longer your master, for you are no longer subject to the law, which enslaves you to sin. Instead you are free by God’s grace”. Romans 6:12-14
Jesus’ death freed us from sin, not for us to continue sinning. And since we are all humans and subject to weakness and imperfection, there will be times when we fall. In this case we repent and ask forgiveness and then move on, always striving to live in righteousness.
