Who Is God?
What is your perception of God? Do you see God as an angry old man just waiting to render punishment on a sinning world? Or do you see Him as someone who does not care one way or the other about what happens to us as humans? Do you even believe that he exists? Some people know of God, but they don't really know Him. Let us see if we can get an idea of who God really is.
What is your perception of God?
Do you see God as an angry old man just waiting to render punishment on sinning world? Or do you see Him as someone who does not care one way or the other about what happens to us humans? Do you even believe that he exists?
Some people know of God, but they don't really know Him. Let us see if we can get an idea of who God really is.
God Is Love
The bible describes God in one word - Love. If we don't know what love is or how to love then we can't know God.
"But anyone who does not love does not know God - for God is love." I John 4:8
"The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! By his mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each day." Lamentations" 3:22-23
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life". John 3:16
God is Spirit
The next thing we notice about God is that He is Spirit.
"For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth." John 4:24
God is a Family
Then we see that God is a family - Father, son and - us.
God and Jesus Christ always existed.
"In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He was in the beginning with God." John 1:1-2
They then decided to create more of them.
"Then God said, 'Let us make people in our image, to be like ourselves...' So God created people in his own image; God patterned them after himself, male and female he created them." Genesis 26, 27
However, after Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, we became separated from God. The family he intented to create - the spirit family - was not possible. But after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we can now still become a part of that family. It is a choice we as individuals have to make.
"Long ago, even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ". Ephesians 1:4-5
"Jesus replied, "I assure you, unless you are born again, you can never see the Kingdom of God"... The truth is, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven." John 3:3, 5-6
To become a part of God's family, you must repent, be baptised and receive the Holy Spirit, then, at Jesus' coming, we will be together with Him in the Kingdom of God, here on earth.
God Loves Righteousness
God is a God of righteousness. He does not like when we do wrong or sin. God does not take delight in seeing sinners die or suffer. His will is for everyone to live a happy and righteous life.
"...Righteous people will be rewarded for their own goodness, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness. But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my laws and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die. All your past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done. Do you think, asks the Sovereign Lord, that I like to see wicked people die? Of course not! I only want them to turn from their wicked ways and live." Ezekiel 18:20-23
God is Compassionate and Merciful
God is a God of great mercy and compassion and all he wants is for us to obey him. He also wants us to obey him so we can experience a happy and abundant life. He will especially bless those who are humble.
"But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children's children of those who are faithful to his covenant, of those who obey his commandments". Psalm 103:17-18
"The Lord is merciful and gracious, he is slow to get angry and full of unfailing love". Psalm 103:8
"I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word". Isaiah 66:2
God is Our Provider and Caretaker
God will take care of those who put him first in their life.
"So don't worry about having enough food or drink or clothing. Why be like the pagans who are so deeply concerned about these things? Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs, and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern". Matthew 6:31-33
So we see God is love, a family, spirit, righteous, compassionate, merciful, and our provider. What is most important about God is that he wants to have a relationship with us and the only way this can be accomplished is to obey him - his commandments.
If we put God first in our lives, we will experience all the above and will better appreciate who God really is.
