The Power of God's Holy Spirit

Everybody seeks power in some form or fashion. Some seek political power, technological power, financial power, etc. But what about spiritual power? How many people seek and actually gain spiritual power? Now don't confuse spiritual power with religious power, it's not the same thing. A person can be religious without any spirituality whatsoever. We gain spiritual power through God's Holy Spirit.

"...Each of you must turn from your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". (Acts 2:38)

We receive this Spirit after being baptized as seen in Acts 2:38. So what exactly is the Holy Spirit? In the Bible, the Holy Spirit has been likened to water:

"If you believe in me, come and drink! For the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within (When he said 'living water', he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him...)" John 7:38-39

a cloud:

"As the priests came out of the inner sanctuary, a cloud filled the Temple of the Lord. The priests could not continue their work because the glorious presence of the Lord filled the temple." I Kings 8:10-11

and fire:

"Do not put out the Spirit's fire". I Thessalonians 5:19 (NIV)

However, the most popular symbol for God's Holy Spirit is the dove.

The Holy Spirit is God's Nature

You see, the Holy Spirit is God's Nature. It is not a person. All throughout the Bible you see God using His Spirit to do His work. As a matter of fact, God's Spirit created the heavens and earth:

"When you send your Spirit, new life is born to replenish all the living of the earth." Psalm 104:30

It was God's Holy Spirit that impregnated the Virgin Mary.

"Now this is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was arranged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit". Matthew 1:18

You see how powerful the Holy Spirit is? Imagine all the good things we can do when we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. We can actually live a sin free life.

"So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. For the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you through Christ Jesus from the power of sin that leads to death". Romans 8:1-2

A True Christian has the Holy Spirit Living in Them

A true Christian is a person who has the Holy Spirit living in them.

"But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christian at all)" Romans 8:9

God's Spirit also helps us to understand his word - the bible. Without the Spirit's help, the bible is of no use if we do not have a thorough understanding of what it teaches.

"And God has actually given us his Spirit (not the world's spirit) so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. When we tell you this we do not use words of human wisdom. We speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit's words to explain spiritual truths. But people who are'nt Christians can't understand these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them because only those who have the Spirit can understand what the Spirit means." I Corinthians. 2:12-14

When we have God's Holy Spirit dwelling in us, living a righteous life becomes easier. We cannot do it without the Spirit's help. It will take some time though to see real results, as living a christian life is a lifetime journey. Just like a seed, when planted, takes a while to develop into a mature tree, so we too, who have received the Holy Spirit, will take time to develop into mature Christians.

Now that we understand the power of the Holy Spirit, it us now time to go and bear fruit.
