When the Roman Catholic Church started to rule the Christian world, Christian Apologetics became dormant for quite sometime. This was because the Catholic Church persecuted those who were opposed to them. People were afraid to express their feelings.
Then with the advent of the Reformation, Christianity in all its forms, even the gospel, was rejected by most. This also gave rise to numerous Christian movements. What kept them from rejecting the bible totally was the creation. Creation was accepted by most people, even the educated ones. The thinking at the time was the only way to get rid of the Christians was to find a way to destroy the credibility of the bible, but they had no idea how to do this.
Then came Charles Darwin and his Theory of Evolution. Darwin was able to form his theory from a scientific point of view. Keep in mind that many people started to believe that science had the answer to everything. If science could not prove it, then it can’t be true. This is why Darwin’s theory became so popular.
